Gurli Hjorth - selected works

I collect earth!

After a couple of years making simple ceramic forms in bright glazes, I took a sample of some local earth, and fired it in my gas-kiln.

The glaze it produced was so surprising, it made me laugh!

The glaze was quite different from what I was used to - its multitude of colours and its texture overwhelmed me.

Since then, I have collected earth samples from all sorts of places, and my work has taken on a new, more sculptural direction.

My collection of earth samples ranges from earth which is from 1 to 65 million years old.

The different expressions these sorts of earth produce are a constant challenge and source of inspiration.
